EPA Climate Change Lecture Oct 22

The EPA, as part of the National Dialogue on Climate Action, will host a hybrid (attend in-person or online) public lecture. Professor Neil Adger will explore how climate change poses risks to life and livelihoods through flood risk, heatwaves, wildfires and drought.

This lecture proposes ways to ensure health and well-being are accounted for when planning for floods and will examine whether people are made healthier and happier by strategies such as hard engineering, managed retreat, or living with risk. Professor Adger will draw on new findings from Ireland, the UK and Ghana.

Reuse Month 2022

Irelands Reuse Month

October is Ireland’s National Reuse Month, reuse is about valuing our stuff, by using and reusing it for as long and as often as possible. This avoids the need to extract raw materials, manufacture and distribute new stuff, and avoids waste thereby cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.

This might sound like stepping back in time, to when people recycled everything from pots and pans to curtains and car parts but that is what we may need to do in order to go forward on a safe, greener route! This 2022 Reuse Campaign is targeted at a generation that grew up in a consumer culture that didn’t consider where things came from or sources and dumping toxic waste.

Reuse in General

Throughout October we invite the public and all organisations to hold and attend community-based workshops in various areas such as managing food waste and upcycling everything from fashion to furniture. The idea is to bring people beyond the concept of “reduce, reuse and recycle” to more conscious prevention of waste in the first place.

National Reuse Month’s aim is to inspire you and provide you with the skills and tools to reuse more at home, at work and at play. For example, you may have already reused by getting shoes resoled rather than replacing them, or borrowing books from the library.

Reuse at Home

To cut down on waste and greenhouse gas emissions, we asked everyone to go further in October and beyond by prioritising repair, buying second-hand and upcycled, borrowing, swapping and refilling.

Recycle IT

Recycle IT support reuse through the dismantling of some but not all electronic equipment received for recycling. The components are removed and separated into batches for reuse. This includes metals of all types. Items which arrive packed in cardboard are separated and cardboard is saved for reuse. Plastic crates and boxes are also reused as are pallets. Old and undamaged screens, keyboards and mice are reused in the offices and at home by those team members working at home. Functional bikes are put to one side and used by staff and others. All real examples of reuse.

Finglas and Ballymun! – Free Recycling Days Sept 2023

Visit Your Community Electrical Recycling Day

Approximately 19.5 million WEEE appliances were collected for recycling by WEEE Ireland in 2022 including 113,000 fridges, 318,000 large household appliances and 225,000 TVs and monitors recycled safely. The equivalent of over 60 million used AA portable batteries were also prevented from ending up in landfills. This is great news and hopefully, we can continue this trend.

Your Home!

The average family home in Ireland is estimated to contain an average of 15 to 20 electrical items which have reached the end of their useful life, with new EU data indicating that each person is responsible for an average of 4kg to 5kg of hoarded electrical waste.

Recycle IT – Trinity Comprehensive School 2021

and kitchens.

Research shows that Irish homes contain an average of 15kg-20kg of electrical items which are lying idle. (Source: WEEE Ireland) – It may be time to clear out and declutter!
