Electric vans today!

Recycle IT are similar to most organisations requiring transport to get a job done meaning fossil fuel vans and trucks are used by our team to collect waste electrical equipment for recycling daily.  This is changing!  Now electric vehicles can do the same or similar work with the added benefit of helping reduce carbon emissions and create a cleaner, greener environment for all.

Today, there are more electric vans on for sale than ever before.  With no CO2  exhaust emissions  you can get tasks completed without contributing further to global warming. Electric vans are virtually noiseless with only faint high-pitched sound from the electric motor. Charging an electric van takes approx. eight hours for a full battery and can be quicker if rapid charging stations are installed and available. With vans now available in different sizes it’s time to plan a transport change?

Making the change!

Recent reports say the DHL Group and U.S. car manufacturer Ford have released a jointly manufactured a new electric delivery van. This van was developed to address the growing demand for emission friendly delivery and collection vehicles.  The van is branded the “StreetScooter WORK XL” and merges a Ford Transit chassis with an electric drivetrain designed for DHL, the worldwide logistics company.

This is the third and largest electric delivery van made by DHL, which began manufacturing its own vehicles after finding none that met its specifications. A further options includes the Nissan NV200 which is available for purchase in Ireland.

There is a plan to put 2,500 of the new electric vans on the roads in major cities by the end of 2018. These new van  are expected  to save 5 metrics tons (5.5 tons) of carbon dioxide each year. This initiative will also help address recent announcements by governments to remove petrol and diesel vehicles from the road by the middle of the century.

DHL has already started selling smaller models of it electrical vans to third parties and the StreetScooter WORK XL will also be available for purchase but no date has been announced.

Dublin based GoCar recently announced its GoElectric range, consisting of a fleet of up to 10 BMW i3 electric cars . This expansion of the GoCar fleet gives members the chance to  zip through Dublin in new and eco-friendly electric vehicles. It’s fair to say these car will probably be followed with electrical vans once demand grows!

Recycle IT would love to be in the same position as DHL and GoCar but as a not for profit social enterprise it may take a little time to transition from our current collection vans to newer and more eco-friendly electric models. One thing we can say is  “it’s on our wish list and with time we will make the wish come true”

Recycle IT is a not for profit social enterprise providing collection and drop off services for all types of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).  During 2016 Recycle IT offered drop off and collection services to 100,000 homes, schools, charities and businesses across Dublin and surrounding areas collecting thousands of TV’s, cables, monitors, microwaves and washing machines.
