Spring Recycling with Sandyford Business District

Free Electrical Recycling:

Sandyford Business District is hosting a Free Electrical Recycling Event to help local people, employees working in nearby businesses, and businesses themselves recycle their old or broken electrical items safely and responsibly. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to promote sustainability and reduce waste in the community.

This event provides a convenient way for everyone to dispose of unwanted electrical items without harming the environment. Whether it’s an old laptop, a broken toaster, or outdated office equipment, all electrical items will be collected and recycled properly.

Who Can Participate?

  • Local Residents – Get rid of old electrical items cluttering your home.
  • Employees in Local Businesses – Drop off broken personal gadgets or work-related electronic waste.
  • Businesses – Dispose of obsolete office electronics in an environmentally friendly way.

What Can You Recycle? You can bring in a wide range of electrical and electronic items, including:

  • Computers, laptops, and accessories
  • Desktop printers and scanners
  • Mobile phones and tablets
  • TVs and monitors
  • Kitchen appliances (toasters, kettles, microwaves, cookers etc.)
  • Cables, chargers, and batteries

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are great times to buy electronics like TVs, laptops, or smartphones. Discounts can save you a lot of money! Black Friday online sales grew 8% year-over-year (YoY) to $70.9 billion globally in 2023. Statista says, in 2024, over 80 percent of consumers in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Turkey were planning to make purchases during Black Friday. But what happens to your old or broken electronics? It’s important to recycle them safely to protect the environment. The following might help!

1. Plan Your Purchase

Before heading out to shop, think about what you need. Do you want a bigger TV or a laptop for work? Write a list so you don’t overspend.

2. Research Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

Check online stores like Amazon, Walmart, or Best Buy. Compare prices to get the best deal on your new TV or gadget. Don’t forget to read reviews before buying!

3. Don’t Throw Away Old Electronics

Old TVs, phones, or laptops should not go in the trash. They contain materials like plastic, glass, and metals. If thrown away, these can harm the environment.

4. Reuse, Donate, or Sell

If your old items still work:

  • Reuse them: Turn an old laptop into a backup or media device.
  • Donate: Give them to schools, charities, or friends.

The Joint Committee

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action meet in mid June 2024, to discuss the Circular Economy as it relates to Consumer Durables. Examples of consumer durable goods include vehicles, books, household goods (home electrical appliances, consumer electronics, furniture, musical instruments, tools, gardening tools, furniture, bicycles etc.), sports equipment, jewelry, medical equipment, toys and more.

The Group

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin (TD for Limerick City and the Green Party Spokesperson for Transport, Climate Action and Environment) said: “Consumer durables are goods designed to last a long time and are not intended to be bought very often. Development of a circular economy requires shifting Ireland towards a more sustainable pattern of production and consumption, particularly when it comes to consumer durables”.

“The development of reuse, repair, recycling and sharing schemes, as well as circular design and business models, all have roles to play in reducing waste generated by consumer durables. As part of our examination of how the Circular Economy Act is working since it became law two years ago”, The Committee as part of it work will discuss these issues and related matters with stakeholder groups including social enterprises and organisation representing the community reuse and recycling.

The Community Resources Network (CRNI) saw this as great opportunity to present to this Oireachtas Joint Committee on the vital role social enterprises play in promoting the circular economy, especially in relation to consumer durables.

CRNI were joined on the day by two board members, Bernie Connolly (Cork Environmental Forum) and Una Lavelle (Recycle IT, Dublin). The Rediscovery Centre, the National Centre for the Circular Economy in Ireland and CRNI member were also invited to the committee session to present their findings.

Circular Economy and My Social Enterprise Event – March 5th

Local Enterprise Week 2024 Event

The event is being hosted as part of Dublin’s involvement in the European Commission’s: European Social Economy Regions – Project & Network and Dublin’s support of the implementation of the Transition Pathway for Proximity and Social Economy. The objective of the ESER project is to build networks of Social Economy actors, encourage collaboration and to raise awareness about the social economy at regional and local level. 

The event will focus on embedding the Circular Economy, the practical steps, examples and resources available for enterprises and social enterprises. There will be networking, panel discussion, presentation, Q&A and a fireside chat so a varied evening.

Focus on the social economy and circular economy.

The event will:

  • Highlight the overarching context (Social and circular economy trends, policies, updates), feature examples from social enterprises, circular economy enterprises and regular enterprises that have adopted sustainability / circular economy practices.
  • Promote resources and supports that can help enterprises and social enterprises to learn about, embed, enhance sustainability and circular economy practices in their operations etc. as well as key social enterprise resources including the Dublin City Social Enterprise Awards 2024.

The event will take place in the Guinness Enterprise Centre, Taylor’s Ln, The Liberties, Dublin 8 on Tuesday March 5th 2024 between 6pm and 9am. To learn more and book please click here.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) combines a mixture of materials, components, and hazardous content. If not properly managed this mixture can cause major environmental and health concerns. It also worth noting the production of new electronics requires the use of scarce and expensive resources (e.g. around 10% of total gold worldwide is used for their production).

Collection, treatment, and recycling of electronics at the end of their life is therefore essential. This process helps improve the management of old electrical and electronic equipment and contributes positively to a circular economy and enhance resource efficiency. It also helps maintain and create jobs in our local economy.

WEEE to Work Initiative 2019

In order to help with recycling old electrical appliances, Recycle IT are offering organizations of all shapes and sizes based in South Dublin the opportunity to host a WEEE to Work event which will allow staff to recycle all old electrical and electronic equipment. All you need to do is contact our office to book your collection. Please remember we need a minimum for 50 – 60 electrical items to make the collection a success, both from a cost and environmental perspective. Items for recycling can be large or small.

You can recycle any dual-purpose home or small office items with a plug or battery, free, including batteries through a free collection all supported by Recycle IT. Please find a full PDF lists here of the type of items recycled.

Recycle IT will provide the collection team, help and transport to collect items from a central location on a pre-arranged day, usually in the morning after 9am and before 1pm.

As part of the Spring Clean and Reuse Month initiatives, South Dublin Country Council have agreed to have a WEEE recycling receptacle available in their offices in Tallaght to allow staff to recycle. during April and Oct each year.  Your company can follow their lead by placing a reusable receptacle e.g. a large box or bin in your building for the collection of old electrical items.

Please note, Recycle IT are not in a position to provide receptacles as it not environmentally, time or cost-friendly.
